terrify
To terrify means to make someone feel really, really scared. Imagine you’re playing in the park and suddenly, a big, loud thunderstorm comes. The loud boom of thunder can make you feel like your heart is racing, and you might want to run and hide. That feeling is being terrified.
Think of a time when you heard a spooky story at bedtime. The story might make you feel like there are monsters under your bed or in your closet. Even though you know monsters aren’t real, the story makes your imagination run wild, and you feel a little nervous to turn off the lights. This is another way to understand being terrified.
Imagine you’re on a roller coaster for the first time. As you climb up higher and higher, you might feel your tummy doing flips, and your palms get sweaty because you’re a bit scared of the big drop. That mix of excitement and fear is another way to feel terrified. But remember, even when you’re terrified, it’s okay to feel that way, and there are always ways to feel safe again.
