When you think about ‘spin’, think about a top. A top is a toy that you can twist with your fingers, and it goes around and around on the floor. It moves in a circle really fast, and that’s called spinning. The top stays upright because it spins so quickly.
Another way to think about spinning is when you are on a merry-go-round at the playground. You sit on it, and someone pushes it around and around. You feel like you’re going in a big circle, and everything around you looks like it’s moving fast.
Sometimes, when you spin around yourself, you might feel a little dizzy. It’s like when you turn around in circles a lot and then stop. Your head feels funny because it was moving in a circle, just like the top or the merry-go-round.
Even the Earth spins! It spins like a top, too, but it goes much slower. That’s why we have day and night. When one side of the Earth turns towards the sun, it’s day. When it turns away, it’s night.
