A flood is when there is too much water in one place. Imagine pouring a big glass of water into a small bowl. The bowl can’t hold all the water, so it spills over the sides. That’s like a flood! When it rains a lot, the rivers and lakes can get too full, and the extra water spills onto the land, just like the water spilling from the bowl.
Think of a bathtub where the water keeps coming in without stopping. If the plug is in and the water doesn’t drain away, the tub overflows, and water goes all over the bathroom floor. In a flood, the ground can’t soak up all the rain, so the water spreads everywhere, just like water on the bathroom floor.
Sometimes, a flood is like a big puddle that covers streets and fields. Imagine if your whole backyard became a giant puddle! People and animals have to be careful because the water can be deep and fast. Floods can make it hard to walk or drive, and can make things very wet and messy.
