When you expect something really exciting, like getting a big, shiny balloon, and then you find out the balloon is not there, or it popped, you might feel disappointed. It’s like when you think you’re going to have a scoop of your favorite ice cream, but then you find out the shop is closed. That feeling you get, when things don’t turn out the way you hoped, is called being disappointed.
Imagine you’re building a tall tower with your blocks, and you think it’s going to be the tallest tower ever! But then, suddenly, the tower falls over. That feeling when the tower falls and you wish it hadn’t, is disappointment. It’s when you really, really wanted something to happen, but it didn’t.
Think about when you’re drawing a picture, and you hope it will look just like a rainbow. But when you finish, the colors aren’t as bright as you wanted them to be. That little sadness or letdown you feel is what it means to be disappointed. It’s okay to feel this way, and it happens to everyone sometimes.
